9. AI Can Predict Cancer Deaths

New AI technology can help predict a cancer patient’s risk of death based on a single photograph of their face. Researchers plugged thousands of images of cancer patients into a model that analyzed them using a technique dubbed “attention mapping,” in effect looking at specific parts of a person’s face to determine their biological age and risk of dying within 90 days; smokers and heavy drinkers were particularly likely to show signs of aging. The model is not yet ready for wide deployment — it has yet to be trained on a diverse array of faces — but one of the project’s lead researchers told Scientific American it could hopefully help doctors detect warning signs of disease spreading.
